Martin Winterkorn, the former CEO of Volkswagen, is on trial for fraud, market manipulation, and perjury related to the 'dieselgate' scandal, in which Volkswagen allegedly cheated emissions tests. The scandal, which surfaced in 2015, involved the installation of defeat devices in cars to pass lab emissions tests while failing to meet emissions standards on the road, affecting over nine million vehicles worldwide.
