E-bikes: eBay to ban private sales over fire safety concerns

Published On Oct 8, 2024, 4:15 PM

eBay is set to prohibit the sale of private e-bikes and e-bike batteries in the UK starting October 31 due to safety concerns regarding battery fires. This decision comes after various incidents, including a notable rise in e-bike fires, which increased by 78% from the previous year. The London Fire Brigade reported that they recorded 155 e-bike fires in 2023. eBay will restrict listings to only approved business sellers and will begin auditing these sellers for compliance with safety regulations. Safety advocates are calling for stronger legislation to ensure online marketplaces uphold product safety standards.

Stock Forecasts

The eBay policy change poses risks to the stock value in the short term, particularly if it impacts the e-commerce platform's sales. However, focusing on safety may enhance eBay's brand image in the long run.
