Arm to scrap Qualcomm chip design license in feud escalation

Published On Oct 22, 2024, 10:53 PM

Arm Holdings has decided to cancel its architectural license agreement with Qualcomm, which allowed Qualcomm to design chips using Arm's technology. This cancellation intensifies an ongoing legal dispute between the two companies over Qualcomm's acquisition of another chip design firm, Nuvia, and alleged breaches of contract. If the termination takes effect, Qualcomm may face significant disruptions in its chip production, which could impact its substantial revenue from processors used in many smartphones. The situation highlights a shift in the relationship between the two companies, who have historically been partners but are now increasingly competing in the semiconductor sector.

Stock Forecasts

The strained relationship and potential loss of license could hinder Qualcomm's ability to produce and sell its chips effectively, especially given that most of its revenue stems from these products. Analysts predict a decline in Qualcomm's stock price due to the increasing uncertainty surrounding its operations and revenue forecasts.
