DirecTV scrapping DISH merger

DirecTV has decided to walk away from its planned acquisition of DISH Network's video distribution service after DISH's bondholders rejected DirecTV's debt exchange offer, which was a necessary condition for the acquisition to proceed. This deal, which was supposed to consolidate two key players in a declining pay-TV market, involved DirecTV paying $1 for DISH and assuming $9.75 billion in DISH's debt. The failure of this merger highlights the increasing competition DirecTV and DISH face from streaming services, which continue to gain popularity among consumers.
