Why the Dollar Keeps Getting Stronger
Published On Nov 14, 2024, 5:04 AM
Following the election of Donald J. Trump as President-elect, the value of the U.S. dollar has increased significantly, marking a substantial shift from its previous weakening trend. Economists predict that Trump's proposed economic policies, such as tariffs and tax cuts, will strengthen the dollar further, contradicting his statement about preferring a weaker dollar for boosting exports. As a result, the dollar index has risen about 3% since Election Day, impacting other currencies and global economic dynamics, including making U.S. exports less competitive and complicating debt payments for countries with weaker currencies.

The strengthening of the U.S. dollar typically indicates a healthier economic outlook for the U.S., leading to potential investments in sectors such as financial services and multinational corporations that can benefit from strong dollar pricing strategies. However, exporters might face challenges. Investors may look to hedge against this dollar strength through currency-focused ETFs.
