Canada's ambassador to the US says Trudeau's dinner with Trump key to getting tariffs removed
Published On Dec 1, 2024, 3:17 PM
Canada's ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, stated that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's recent dinner with President-elect Donald Trump was crucial in helping Trump understand the differences between the Canadian and Mexican borders concerning drug and migrant flow. The meeting aimed to persuade Trump that Canada poses little threat regarding drug trafficking, with 99.8% of fentanyl in the U.S. coming from Mexico. While Trump did not back down from his tariff threats, the discussion was described as 'productive', and Canada is ready to invest in border security to address U.S. concerns.

Positive
Canada's strong trade relationship with the U.S. could benefit from reduced tensions over tariffs, as the removal or softening of tariffs would encourage trade flows. Companies engaged in cross-border trade, particularly those in sectors reliant on Canadian products like energy and materials, stand to gain. ETFs or stocks in these sectors might rise as trade dynamics improve.
