Exxon Plans to Sell Electricity to Data Centers
Published On Dec 11, 2024, 7:00 AM
Exxon Mobil is planning to develop a large natural gas power plant with advanced carbon capture technology to supply electricity to data centers. This marks the company's first foray into providing power outside its operations. The initiative comes in response to the increasing demand for electricity, particularly from technology firms, and aims to reduce carbon emissions significantly. While the project is still in its early stages, Exxon is optimistic about its timeline, stating that the plant could be operational within five years, which is quicker than the time it would take to build new nuclear reactors. The company is currently in discussions with potential customers and has secured land for the project.

Additionally, the investment in carbon capture technology may open new revenue streams, especially as tech companies seek cleaner energy solutions. However, the risks associated with high capital costs and regulatory challenges remain.
