UK 'doesn't have enough builders' for Labour's 1.5m homes

UK construction leaders are warning of a significant shortage in construction workers needed to meet the government's promise of building 1.5 million new homes by 2029. Key issues cited include an aging workforce, Brexit impacts, and insufficient training and apprenticeships for new recruits. The Home Builders Federation indicated that for every 10,000 homes, around 30,000 new workers across various trades, such as bricklaying and plumbing, need to be recruited. Despite the challenges, governmental support and new funding for apprenticeships are in progress, with major builders planning to increase their construction efforts next fiscal year.
