Why you may be paying to help make the mattress industry more eco-friendly

Several states including California, Connecticut, Oregon, and Rhode Island are implementing or increasing fees on mattress and box spring purchases. The fees, which range from $16 to $22.50, are intended to fund mattress recycling programs aimed at keeping discarded mattresses out of landfills. These are part of a broader movement towards "extended producer responsibility" to create a more sustainable and circular economy. The majority of a mattress (over 75%) is recyclable, prompting these legislative efforts to promote recycling and reduce waste.

The move towards increased recycling fees may benefit companies involved in mattress recycling and production of eco-friendly materials. Companies that can adapt to meet recycling demands may see a positive impact as public awareness of environmental concerns grows. Conversely, mattress manufacturers might face higher costs that could impact profit margins if they cannot pass these fees on effectively.
