Toyota unit to settle emissions scandal for $1.6bn

Hino Motors, a subsidiary of Toyota, has agreed to pay $1.6 billion to settle allegations of deceiving U.S. regulators regarding emissions from its diesel engines. The company was charged with fraud for submitting false emissions data related to 105,000 engines sold in the U.S. from 2010 to 2022. In addition to the settlement, Hino will face a five-year import ban on its diesel engines in the U.S. and must implement a compliance and ethics plan. The company is also set to recall certain trucks and replace defective marine and locomotive engines.
