Sainsbury's and Morrisons run 'prohibited' tobacco advertising

Sainsbury's and Morrisons are facing scrutiny for displaying advertisements for heated tobacco products, which may violate UK tobacco advertising laws established in 2002. The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) asserts that these ads are prohibited, although the legality has not been definitively tested in court. Tobacco companies, including Philip Morris International and Japan Tobacco International, argue that heated tobacco products do not fall under the existing definition of tobacco products, as they do not produce smoke. The controversy raises concerns about potential health risks, particularly for minors, and the upcoming Tobacco and Vapes Bill is expected to strengthen advertising regulations.
