Port Talbot: Tata Steel electric furnace approved by planners

Published On Feb 18, 2025, 5:59 AM

Tata Steel has received planning approval for a £1.25 billion electric arc furnace (EAF) project at its Port Talbot steelworks, anticipated to begin construction this summer and be operational by early 2028. The new EAF will primarily use scrap steel, replacing the recently closed blast furnaces and aiming for significant reductions in carbon emissions. Tata Steel highlighted its financial struggles, having lost £4 billion in Port Talbot since 2007, and expressed concerns over US steel import tariffs. JCB has committed to purchasing 'green' steel from the new facility, indicating a potential demand for sustainable steel products.

The approval of the new electric arc furnace positions Tata Steel for not just a transformation in production practices but also a chance to regain financial stability due to reduced operational costs and the potential for new green steel contracts. The collaboration with JCB further increases market confidence in their sustainable steel offering.
