Boar’s Head has announced the indefinite closure of its Virginia deli meat plant following a severe listeria outbreak that resulted in nine deaths and numerous illnesses across 18 states. The outbreak was linked to the company’s liverwurst product, which will be permanently discontinued. The plant, which employed about 500 workers, had a history of sanitation issues and had been warned about unsatisfactory conditions, including mold and rust. Federal inspectors noted a lack of controls to prevent contamination at the facility.
