The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee revealed that recent hacks of U.S. telecommunications systems by a Chinese group, named 'Salt Typhoon', allowed intruders to listen to calls and read text messages. The breaches were much deeper than initially reported, exploiting vulnerabilities in aging equipment and network connections in major telecom companies such as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. While U.S. officials initially thought the hack mainly targeted systems under legal surveillance, it has been revealed that the hackers created broader access throughout the telecommunications network. Despite the discovery, the extent and locations of the breaches remain poorly understood, indicating a significant cybersecurity threat.
