DirecTV has reached an agreement to acquire Dish Network for $1, with plans to take on its substantial debt. The merger aims to create a major player in the pay-TV market, combining DirecTV's 11 million subscribers with Dish's 8.1 million. This deal provides a potential lifeline for Dish, which faces bankruptcy due to $2 billion in debt due soon. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and involves TPG acquiring DirecTV from AT&T for $7.6 billion. EchoStar, Dish's parent company, will retain some business aspects and continue operating independently.
