The UK government has announced a £1 billion boost to bus services across England, with funding allocated based on need, population, and deprivation levels. This investment aims to enhance bus services by allowing local authorities to introduce new routes, increase service frequency and ensure vital routes are protected. Areas set to benefit include Leicester, the Isle of Wight, Torbay, Southend, Cambridgeshire, and Peterborough. The announcement comes with plans for the Buses Bill, which will empower local transport authorities to manage their own bus services more effectively. Additionally, there's a new cap on bus fares aimed at maintaining affordability for passengers.
