One in five rail passengers forced to stand in morning peak

According to official statistics, one in five rail passengers in England and Wales were left standing during morning peak hours due to high commuter numbers. From September to December 2023, the average number of commuters to major cities rose by 13% to 1.7 million, while train operators only increased seating capacity by 2%. London experienced the most significant arrival at a daily average of 1.1 million, highlighting a shift in travel habits compared to pre-Covid times, with fewer passengers arriving in the peak hours.
