Second class letter deliveries on Saturdays could be cut

Royal Mail is considering significant reforms to its second class mail services, potentially allowing it to stop Saturday deliveries and implement alternate weekday deliveries. This is in response to declining letter volumes and financial losses, with estimates that these changes could save £300 million annually. Regulatory body Ofcom is reviewing the Universal Service Obligation that mandates Royal Mail's delivery schedule, although it has faced criticism for poor service performance. Royal Mail's owner is currently undergoing a takeover by Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky, who has pledged to maintain the universal service for five years. The reforms are aimed at enhancing sustainability and efficiency in the face of increasing competition from parcel delivery services.
