Teens Think Movies and TV Shows Have Too Much Sex, Study Finds

Published On Oct 24, 2024, 9:00 AM

A recent study from UCLA reveals that young audiences (ages 10 to 24) prefer content focused on platonic relationships over romance and explicit sexual content, with 63.5% expressing this desire, up from 51.5% in the previous year. This sentiment contrasts with the popularity of currently trending shows and movies that heavily feature romantic and sexual themes. The study indicates a discrepancy between what young people say they want and what they actually watch. Adolescents are also frustrated with being influenced by social media figures in their viewing choices. The researchers aim to provide better insights to filmmakers about youth preferences.

Stock Forecasts

With the shift in content preferences among younger audiences towards more platonic relationship-focused narratives, companies involved in producing such content could see an uptick in viewership. Therefore, streaming platforms that adapt to these preferences may present investment opportunities.

Conversely, traditional media companies that continue to rely heavily on romance and sexualized content, defying the emerging trends indicated by this study, may face declining viewership and subscriber numbers.
