Viral banana artwork duct-taped to wall sells for $6.2M

Maurizio Cattelan's conceptual artwork, titled "Comedian," which is essentially a banana duct-taped to a wall, sold for $6.2 million at a recent Sotheby's auction in New York. The sale comes after the piece debuted in 2019 at Art Basel Miami Beach, where it sold for $120,000. The auction house had initially estimated its value between $1 million and $1.5 million. The new owner will receive a roll of duct tape and a certificate of authenticity, as they do not technically own the banana itself but rather the right to recreate the artwork.
