Uber has been fined 290 million euros (over $324 million) by the Dutch Data Protection Authority for violating EU data protection laws by transferring sensitive driver information to the U.S. without adequate security measures. The information included personal data such as tax licenses and criminal records. Uber plans to appeal the decision, arguing that it has been compliant with EU regulations. The fine will not be enforced until after the appeal is resolved, which could take up to four years.
