Cruise Lines Build Bigger Ships as Demand Grows

Royal Caribbean is set to expand its fleet of megaships following the successful launch of the Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world. The company has two additional Icon Class ships scheduled for release in 2025 and 2026, with plans for a fourth by 2027 and options for more. This expansion comes as the cruise industry experiences record demand, with passenger numbers expected to rise to 34.7 million this year, surpassing previous records. However, the rapid growth and size of these ships have drawn criticism from environmental groups concerned about sustainability.

Given the strong demand for cruises and the success of the Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean appears well-positioned for growth. The expansion of its fleet may enhance revenue streams and attract more passengers, particularly with the trend in affordable packages.
