Money paid to sperm donors rises as UK faces shortage

Published On Sep 30, 2024, 7:05 PM

The UK has increased the compensation for sperm donors from £35 to a maximum of £45 per clinic visit effective from October 1, 2023. This change comes as part of a broader adjustment that also raises egg donor compensation from £750 to £986. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) cites high inflation as a reason for the increase amid a noted shortage of donors. Although financial compensation is not intended to serve as a payment for the biological contribution, some groups express concern about the implications of any monetary incentives on altruistic donation.

The discussions about donor compensation may also impact legislation or public sentiment regarding fertility services, leading to broader awareness and potential new policies in the sector.
