Southwest Airlines announces major change to long-standing passenger perk
Published On Mar 11, 2025, 9:56 AM
Southwest Airlines has announced the end of its long-standing policy of offering free checked bags for most travelers. Starting May 28, passengers will face fees for the first and second checked bags on flights booked after this date. Only loyalty members and business travelers will continue to enjoy the benefit of two free checked bags. This change comes as part of a broader strategy to increase revenue and profitability, which includes introducing premium seating and a new basic fare for budget tickets. CEO Bob Jordan emphasized the need to adapt to changing customer needs and attract a wider customer base.

The move to charge for checked baggage, while potentially leading to some decrease in passenger satisfaction, is aimed at boosting revenue significantly for Southwest Airlines. Given the airline industry has been recovering post-pandemic, this revenue-enhancing strategy could result in improved financial performance in the upcoming quarters.
