Money paid to sperm donors rises as UK faces shortage

The UK has increased the compensation for sperm donors from £35 to a maximum of £45 per clinic visit effective from October 1, 2023. This change comes as part of a broader adjustment that also raises egg donor compensation from £750 to £986. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) cites high inflation as a reason for the increase amid a noted shortage of donors. Although financial compensation is not intended to serve as a payment for the biological contribution, some groups express concern about the implications of any monetary incentives on altruistic donation.
